Located 128 kilometers (80 mi) south of Cancun, Tulum is the best example of what Mayan cities were like on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is believed to have been a port for the city of Coba. Its privileged location, at the junction of both land and coastal routes, allowed for Tulum to become a very important port with contacts all over Central Mexico and Central America.

Nowadays, Tulum is the best preserved coastal archaeological site. Studies have proved that it was a well defended and fortified city, and that its main structure, El Castillo (The Castle) was also used as a lighthouse for ships, showing the way through the very dangerous coral reefs. Other important buildings include the Templo del Dios del Viento (Temple of the God of the Wind) and the Templo del Dios Descendiente (Temple of the Descending God).

Afterwards, you will have the chance to enjoy the beach and the Caribbean Sea at a nearby beach club.
